World Oceans Day 2015
Science 22.05.2015World Oceans Day, held every June 8th, is the UN-recognized day of ocean celebration and action. People all over our blue planet organize celebrations – which can be a huge event in your community, a special announcement, or anything in between – to support action to protect the ocean. This year, the theme is Healthy oceans, healthy planet, and we’re making a special effort to stop plastic pollution.
Here’s some more general info on World Oceans Day
For 2015, hundreds of celebrations are being planned to celebrate our ocean connections under the theme „Healthy oceans, healthy planet“. These celebrations can be anything from a huge event, to a note in a newsletter giving more information, or a special event at a place of business. We’re asking everyone to mark the day in some way! A major goal this year is to help people reduce their disposable plastic use, to keep the ocean and its animals safer and healthier.
World Oceans Day is just around the corner, but you can still plan a great event or activity to celebrate! Check out this list of quick n’ easy ways to celebrate World Oceans Day and help out our ocean; at least one of them should get you psyched and in the ocean saving spirit.
A few ways you can celebrate World Oceans Day: Hold a World Oceans Day event. Your celebration can be big or small, as long as you’re doing something to help. Check out our ideas for youth and teen projects. For young kids and zoo and aquarium visitors: download resources from the Octonauts. Browse the collection of plastic pollution prevention activities. Be sure to register your celebration on the website and share with the world. Take the Better Bag Challenge, and ask others to join you. Don’t take any disposable plastic bags for a whole year! Or, if you already bring a better bag, cut microbeads or plastic utensils out of your life. Download the Organizer’s Guide and ask others to join you at your celebration.

As a CMAS diver you’re in a unique position. More than anyone else, you experience the beauty of the world underwater as well as above ground. For World Oceans Day we encourage you to share your perspective as a diver who is invested in a healthy ocean – with other divers and your land-based community!
