Future Cooperations Regarding Blancpain’s Ocean Commitment

Science 20.04.2016

At this years Basel World watch fair, French scientist and underwater photographer Laurent Ballesta (the „Coelacanth-man“) met with Ralph Schill, President of the CMAS Scientific Committee, to discuss future cooperations regarding Blancpain’s Ocean Commitment.

Laurent Ballesta is well known and famous for deep and long time dives with closed circuit rebreather. During the "Gombessa" mission he dived face-to-face with the cœlacanth, Latimeria chalumnae, which lives at 130m depth. The scientific expedition aimed at studying this extraordinary animal once thought to have been extinct for 65 million years.

Driven by its own pioneer spirit since its foundation in 1735, Blancpain’s historical connection with diving goes back to 1953, with the development of the first modern diving watch: the Fifty Fathoms. For more than years now, Blancpain has been contributing to raise awareness through ocean exploration. The brand believes that people can only respect and protect what they love, and can only love what they know. To serve this mission, Blancpain strongly supports several scientific expeditions.
