In autumn of 2017 we “revived” the legendary film “LE GRAND BLEU” ( “THE BIG BLUE” ) by organizing, in Amorgos, a unique event; an international free-diving tournament, the Authentic Big Blue; at the location where the most memorable scenes of the film were shot, scenes that created unique feelings and became a point of reference for the free diving community.
The second ABB tournament was organized in September 2018 and it was an anniversary event since it was 30 years after the release of “Le Grand Bleu “film. The 3rdevent will be held from 22 – 28 of September 2019 and will be focused again on the divers who arrive from all over the world.
Inspired by the magical blue, with the aura of the island and the unique awe-inspiring landscape on our side; this year we create again a unique experience.
Weather conditions:
Based on past experience, during the proposed dates for the Authentic Big Blue 2019 competition, we expect for the sea conditions to be favorable. September is traditionally a period of calm seas. The water surface temperature is expected to be around 24°C – 25°C, with a visibility of 30 – 40 meters. Based on our diving experience, there are no currents that may affect the diving area.
The competition will take place about half a mile off the beach of Agia Anna, where the depth reaches 150 meters.
The travel time, from the beach where the athletes will board the dive boat of the competition is about 3 minutes.
In case of bad weather conditions there is an alternative location , Agios Pavlos beach , with a limited depth of 80 m .
A rapid ascent system with counter ballast is included in the safety measures of the competition.
The diver is constantly being monitored, throughout the dive, by a high-resolution sonar, while at each zone of the competition, 3 safety divers will be present. One safety diver will also be at every warm-up buoy.
All safety divers are experienced and trained divers who have worked in numerous competitions (national & worldwide free diving depth championships).
Authentic Big Blue 2019 awards and prizes
The organizing committee of ABB 2019 has some special prizes for the winners. The 3 first individual winners of each discipline will each receive an imitation of ancient Greek statuette. Other awards and prizes will be announced on our website.
Trainings
The week before the commencement of the Authentic Big Blue 2019 competition, training sessions will become available at the competition site.

Medical coverage
The competition dive boat will provide the divers with pure oxygen for decompression and first aid use. At the competition site, throughout all the days of the competition, there will be a medical-emergency speedboat of the Aegean Team, with the doctor of the race on board, ready to provide first aid services and rapid transfer to the beach of Agia Anna. There will constantly be available, throughout the days of the competition, an ambulance to transfer the athlete (within 10 minutes) to the fully equipped medical center in the Town of Amorgos. Also, medical support will be provided by Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center.

Authentic Big Blue
The International Authentic Big Blue Dive Tournament took place for the third consecutive year from September 22 to 28, in Amorgos.
The occasion of its 1st event in 2017 was the idea of a revival of the legendary film "The Big Blue", which was loved by the public.
Authentic Big Blue was organized in September 2018, 30 years after the release of the film. Its central purpose was to serve as a point of reference for the world's apnea diving community. This year, the Authentic Big Blue event honored 36 athletes from 12 countries. The co-organizers of ABB2019 are the Municipality of Amorgos and the South Aegean Region.
The permanent partner is the Amorgos Diving Center and the event is held under the approval of the Hellenic Federation of Underwater Activities and Sport Fishing
The greek national organization is the great sponsor of the 3rd edition providing all the needed to spread the word about the tournament throughout the world. Authentic Big Blue is not just a sport event but a complete experience combining also tourism, culture, gastronomy throughout its parallel events keeping alive the impact of the mythical movie.
